Clod axle dogbone need replaced?

Post by SafetySteve »

I'm rebuilding a couple axles and I noticed the pin in a couple of the dogbones were off. I can move them to either side with some pliers, but I've never had a dogbone do this before. Will these work or do I need new ones? I didn't know if I could put some loctite in there or what.

Just replace it. I've found that once they start shifting then are never the same. You can try some red Loctite or something but I wouldn't expect it to last long. And if you run it and it moves enough it could cause more damage in the end to the knuckle or gears if it jams all of a sudden.
A off roader may be able to jump and run around a track. A on roader may be able to run circles around the road but a monster truck will run over anything and everyone.

When I had my axles apart last I had found 2 that were just like you describe. I pulled the pin all the way out and turned it 90 degrees. Set on the vise and had to hammer back in. I think they will be fine for another year, they pounded in fairly tight.
