Possible 6x6 Build (On a tight budget)

Post by rknaub » Tue Aug 22, 2017 6:36 pm

Started tossing around the idea of building another 6x6. I've got a couple spare axles, and enough parts (minus gears/internals) to build a third. If I can scrounge enough parts up to make three full axles I may get started on this. My plan will be to 3D print most of the frame parts, except for the long (~36") frame rails, I will use some aluminum L stock for that, and print the braces and bottom pieces, make my own links, etc. I don't expect this to be a beauty, but should be functional and tough - all my 3D prints are taking a beating and have no issues yet. Spent a few minutes and drew something up in cad to get an idea of where I am going, surely there will be many issues to work out as it goes. Stay tuned...?

What material are you printing parts in?

PLA because it's so readily available. I've used ABS in the past but I don't really see the need for it. Haven't had any issues with my PLA beadlocks, even on my brushless barbarian.

Some early fitting and prototyping of parts. Not gonna use these shocks, but I can at least get some parts made using them as a mock-up.

glad to hear about the pla. I printed some parts for a clodpounder build good to know it should hold up. Was considering petg if need something more heat resistant.

They're from a 1/8 scale New Bright Ford Raptor, with some printed beadlocks. A little bigger than clod tires, and a lot harder. Was going to use them for a mud truck, but since I had 8, I decided to go a different route.

That's good for tonight, I'm tired and I need some more 8-32 threaded rod anyway.

More progress tonight, third axle mounted. Very happy with how it's turning out. Lots to do still.

Got some solar d772 servos and RC4wd 45T motors on the way. Has anyone ever used an EVX-2 esc with three motors? I have an evx2 laying around and decided to give it a try, wired two motors to one of the outputs and another to the other, and it works - albeit with no load on them. I was just wondering if I should put all three motors on one output or what? Do both outputs share the same wiring path? Does it matter? Regardless, the esc came in a trade and I have no other intended use for it, so if it goes kablooey I don't really care. My last 6x6 I used a Holmes esc and it worked fine with 3 35T motors, but I'm not gonna spend $100 when this seems to work.

So I took a voltmeter to the motor leads and the reds are tied together as well as the blacks, so I am gonna tie both outputs together and run them both to all three motors, which should be here tomorrow hopefully.

Trying to decide on a cab.. thinking this International Harvester might look cool, haven't decided on the rest of the bed - the cab is gonna take 1.5 spools of PLA to print, so about $23 - not bad really. With my Taz 6 I will be able to print it in one piece, roughly 270mm x 270mm.

Grabbed the stl from thingiverse, and used tinkercad to change the size, and make it fit on my frame rails.
