New ZRP Diablo Green Lantern and Snake Bite w/ Screw loose

Post by Budhatrain » Mon Sep 16, 2013 6:49 pm

I have been wanting to do a build with my son, he is super smart and I think the time is right. When we were out at rc4wd's East Cost Scale Competition I noticed that he has driving down pretty good. As a dad I want one-on-one time, and even though a project will take longer, it's valuable time for both of you. So we took the plunge.

With the upcoming racing season right around the corner, I thought building a novice truck would be good. Jon from ZRP let me pic up some special edition Diablo plates, the rest of the truck is my torn down nightwing truck. We are going to run stock silver can motors and use stock tires. My son or daughter will be coming up with me to the MI monthly races and this will be the truck they drive.

Image

You will notice that for this truck I will be using SCREW LOOSE HEX HEAD HARDWARE viewtopic.php?f=64&t=28452. With the special carbon fiber and the stainless steel hardware this chassis pops. Something I have noticed with the black hardware, is that from time sitting in my garage the screws start to rust. I anticipate that will not be a problem with the SS.

So this was a cool way to teach the "lefty loosey, righty tighty" of screws. He picked it up really good and screwing into machined links made it real easy. But he was stubborn he wanted to do all the links. I have to admit I was getting a little anxious just waiting but I caught myself and enjoyed the time.

After he went to bed I finished everything else except for the wheels. He really wanted to put the wheels on. But man I am like the blacked out links with the carbon fiber and stainless steel hardware. This truck looks boss!

Sunday night's are like Friday night for me, I get to stay up real late. Got everything wrapped up so we could start on the wheels in the morning.

After I pulled my son from his video game we assembled the wheels.

I am not one for aluminum axles tubes but this truck came together real easy and looks awesome!!! I love the low profile of the Green Lantern body, blacked out links and tires, and then the stainless steel and aluminum bling.

So now I need to wire it up, I have a couple of ESC's laying around. I plan on running just one battery. Which ESC should I use? I think in the future I would like to add the option of faster modified motors so I am leaning toward the orange evx-2. I know the blue one will work. I am not worried about LVC because I have an alarm to hook up. I have no idea what the other orange esc is. I prefer to run castle because of adjust-ability on the computer.

SO- how do I make the orange evx-2 work? How do I know which battery lead to jump (if I need to)?

If I was going to run the castle- could I run two stock motors on this ESC? If there a special way to wire it?

Let me know your thoughts!!!

I have no idea on the Esc's other than I believe Traxxas makes an adapter to run just one battery with their esc so maybe look that wasy??

The truck itself looks really good. I like the color combos and the Goldberg body.

Looks like your helper's got things well under control.

If the EVX is wired like the EVX-2 is.... then just short the battery wires further away from the on/off button (led light).
Or make a shorted plug so it's reversable if you guess wrong. (that's what I do).
Your also going to want to put high-current connectors on that.

As for the castle esc, it must be put into brushed (w/reverse) mode and you will need to solder up a pair of Y-harnesses just like you would with the XL-5. You also will just not use the middle wire.

As for that orange novac, you could probably go to their site and look up that model to find it's specs, it might even be programmable.

Which Novak is that and does it have a capacitor attached? If that big black thing next too it is a factory capacitor attached too it then I'm guessing it's one of the Hyperfet or Temfet something like that. They were pretty strong esc's so it should have no trouble powering two silver cans. It should have the one touch setup and adjustments on it as well.

thanks for the comments guys, very cool project. I am going to try to get it running by tonight.

SFC K its a max-d body from Parma... the repops are sold by the canadian TeamBlueGroove on ebay. I am actually the third owner of this lid. It was painted by a guy in MI.

It's one of my favorites and I was able to buy it off the second owner earlier this year.

Ahh, the Max D. I have looked at the Team blue groove bodies on the bay in the past and what really makes me mad about them is their are no masks included. #-o

I thought it was a different in the front and rear. It does look cool.

If you are ever looking for a step-son, I'm your boy...

I believe that's the goldberg body. The max'd body should be squared in the back instead of angled on the edges in the rear window area.

I am pretty sure that's how they could tell the difference between the two trucks before the wrap was applied.

Here's the Goldberg body

True that! Got it running tonight and I am pretty excited. It scoots along for sure, very stable and capable truck. If I toss a 3s in here, it would be a contender for the big boys. I just need to button everything down and pic up some type of green underlighting-- I feel this thing should glow green.

The green glow would be perfect for the truck.
