And so it begins....

Post by HoosierClod » Fri Jan 01, 2016 3:26 am

I started on my quest to machine aluminum axles for my Clod. I've been wanting to do this since I bought it nearly 20 years ago. Axle tubes are first, followed by the "C"s on the tube ends, steering knuckles, and eventually, gearboxes. I also plan to make a set of aluminum 2.2" beadlock wheels.

The tubes need the bearing bores finished and mounting holes drilled and they will be done.

Wow! Nice work Adam! Did you say you are going to work on gear boxes too?

Thanks. I would eventually like to make gearboxes, but that will probably be a while. I want to design the boxes to use smaller metal gears so that the boxes themselves can be smaller for better ground clearance.

Started on the knuckles today. The steering arms will be bolt-on.

Thanks. These will be the only set I'm making. I might consider it if I had a CNC lathe and mill, but not with my antique equipment.

This concludes the lathe portion of the program.

Bearing bores are done and now they're ready for the mill.

Thank you.

I'm thinking of going with a worm gear setup in my gearboxes. I can get the same 30:1 ratio that the stock gearing gives with only 2 gears. I may go with 2 more gears before the worm gear to give the option of changing gearing. The worm gear setup would not be ideal for a normal monster/ basher due to the fact that a worm gear setup can not be easily back driven so it would not coast when letting off the throttle. It is ideal for a crawler though since it would work as brakes to keep the truck from rolling and keep it in place when the throttle is released. I found the perfect gears that would only require minimal machining to adapt to the Clod axles.

Nice work sir!

I hear you about making only one set with manual machines. I have made some of my parts for others, but it turns into work and not a hobby anymore.
