Sourcing wierd or hard-to-find hardware

Post by orcusomega » Sun May 02, 2010 4:45 pm

I have to admit, I enjoy working on my rcs as much if not more than actually driving them. That said, I also live out in the relative boonies where local stores dont carry the hardware i need. Just wanted to share what I foundtgat makes life so much easier!

Www.mcmaster.com - McMaster-Carr
www.grainger.com- Grainger

I use both to get the fabrication supplies i need. They carry everything - aluminum sheets, carbon fiber, hardware, delrin\nylon rod - all very goid prices too. Better yet, if there is a Grainger store near you, you order it online, have it shippef to the store and don't pay shipping! BTW: you can also get one of their catalogs (all 4 million pages) so you can shop for goodies you didnt even know you needed :)

I'll be putting up my various projects as I work on them to give you an idea!

Actually, they both do :)

I have been building 1/8 scale nitro's up until recently, and have been using McMaster-Carr and Grainger quite a bit. McMaster-Carr is about 1 1/2 hr from me, so when I put in an order, as long as I do it before 1pm, I have it the next day :) Grainger is a bit slower, 2 days or so, but there is a store nearby where I can have the stuff delivered and get no shipping costs.

The best thing about Grainger is some of the stuff I have been getting it LARGE (i.e. 6 feet of 1/4" nylon rod) - it costs a few dollars, but like $10 to ship since its a wierd size and shape :)

I am hoping that I can use the awesome info I have found here over the last few days to make some really cool stuff and post how-to's :) Not that it would be worth it to most, but useful to some I hope!

Will Grainger sell to private individuals? For the longest time they would only sell to Businesses.

LOL, where there are two ways around this.

1) File a "Doing Business As" form with the state, give yourself a personal company name :)
2) Give them your SSN as your Tax ID to get an account.

I have a DBA on file with the state, so it was easy for me, but I don't think its an issue any more.... Just use the online form to open the account :)
