Clod my new chassis designs

Post by carswindnwaves » Sat May 17, 2008 1:19 pm

Okay the story goes this is my first clod, I bought some original clod axles off ebay (in fairly good condition), and now I'm designing a chassis for the beast. The overall aim is for a crawler with good articulation and a lot of torque. I have a 2ch radio so I will be using 4WS, just that all 4 wheels will turn instead of having control over each axle independantly.

Anyways I have done some research, checked out a lot of pics of clods and started drawing out some ideas in CAD... I have drawn 2 sideplates for the chassis that I like already, for the first one I drew some extra stuff but you can get the idea for the second plate.

I will add dimensions just to check I'm getting it basically right (since its my first clod and my first every chassis build for it, I'm guessing most of the dimensions. All the holes are 4mm at the moment, to accept M4 screws/bolts. The bars holding the 2 sideplates apart are 60mm long.

What do you guys think so far? It's a work in progress so more pics to come soon... my next step will probably be to make a prototype of it in wood (probably double size).

(by the way, the order goes [2nd design] then [1st design + extra] then [1st design])

Here's a dimensioned engineering drawing of my 2nd design.

What do you reckon to the overall length (290mm) and the overall height (81mm)? Are they suitable sizes or should I make it longer / higher?

After some more consideration I've decided to allow 80mm between the two main chassis sideplates. Here is a cad rendering of what stage I'm at now, I'm pretty pleased with it so far!

My next step will to be to try and get some 4-links made up on the CAD program and test the articulation possibilities. I don't think I will consider cantilevers yet as this is still only my first clod.
