Hi, i'm ready too make the jump to a 3c 11.1v lipo battery and give up my heavy 9 cell 5000mah pack. Is there a minimum C and MaH requirement for the stock gearing/stock can motors?
Is there a recommend 3 cell lipo that will fit in the stock battery holder?
My current set up is the stock ESC on 9 cells
Stock clod with bearings, CPE 4 link, vertical mount steering, rear steering lock, rear diff lock, and oil shocks.
I have a traxxas brushless ESC ready to go in and a duratrax 235 charger already.
Just looking to do some yard bashing, and 15-20 mins of run time, and 16/17 mph
Thanks

I can't answer the LIPO question, but you cannot use a brushless ESC with the stock 540 brushed motors. Any replacement motors also have to be suitable for reverse rotation as one motor on the clod is forward rotation while the other is reverse. My understanding is with brushless motors, you best use 2 ESC's, one for each motor.

^^^
That is incorrect, the traxxas brushless esc's are brushed compatable and will indeed run brushed motors.
Android,
If you are planning to use the VXL esc like I suspect you are.... all you need to do to make it run the stock motors is wire up a set if Y-harnesses to the +/- leads on your esc.
The VXL esc's automatically go to brushed mode when connected to a brushed motors(s).
If using a castle-made-for-traxxas esc, it will need to be programmed into brushed mode.
Both SMC and SPC make a 3S hard hase lipo in 4000mah that fits the stock location, but you will need to cut reliefs in the battery cup for the wires.

Oops, forgot about those models....most ESC's don't have that option....
I am still brushed all around....Using a Hobbywing Quicrun 860 on my Clod.....will handle Lipo's if it comes to that.
If he decides to go brushless, though, he will need a second ESC...or so I read.
