understood what you meant Weeb
I wil lower it 10mm , i drilled extra holes for the shocks when i pre fabbed the chassis
I can lower it fairly easy another 10mm(20mm total)if nesessary,
but then i have to modify the battery cover a bit

Btw the name Cylon would be very very very cool indeed! for the silver truck
(only hurts a bit that you came up with that name, not me)
Maybe it would be cool to also add a Knight rider light that the cylons have?!
(useless info:the designer of knight rider was the same designer that did the cylons on battlestar galactica)
And maybe put red leds in the headlights  and so on

So maybe i will call this truck Son of Tiamat instead of the silver one
and the silver one Cylon(or put the chrome cabin on this chassis) :?:
Son of Tiamat was the first thing that popt into my head, when i came up with the idea to build this truck
So that name is kinda stuck in my head now, and i want to use it

Sorry i haven't posted photos yet- its been a bit hectic herebecause of the holidays. The other reason I can't snap pictures easily is because I have Tiamat partially disassembled right now. The tires and superhubs are removed (transport wheels are installed) and the entire body subassembly is removed as well. Its not for bad reasons, its a major upgrade project to the truck over the winter.

But despite all that, just eyeballing your photos i think that dropping the axles about 1cm will really do the trick visually. As long as the tires dont scrub at bottoming out and full articulation- and youre happy with the layout that's all that counts.

As for the red LED effect, that would be pretty neat to pull off. I would guess that a bit of styrene-fu and adding a scoop to the hood (or recessing it like KITT from knight rider)would be pretty sweet. I saw some LED kits on ebay but they all look pretty disappointing. A smaller Arduino like Teensy2 with a simple set of surface mount LEDs and resistors would probably work much better- and you would be in full control of the size. But yeah, the thing with the light effects being re-used on both shows... It happens more often than we usually notice :)

As for the truck names, i cant offer any advice on that. Its totally your call :) i dont mind the name son of Tiamat. It has a nicely sinister ring to it, after an American serial killer named "son of Sam". I dont think that he is well known in the Netherlands :) For me names sometime come naturally especially if the project is very well defined from the start... But t hese are mutant trucks, anything and everything is subject to change at irregularly regular intervals haha

I tried lowering the vehicle
and although it looks a bit more like Tiamat when its lowered,
i think i will convert it back to the higher position
so it sits a little higher then Tiamat
On this truck it gives a bit better clearance between the axles and the chassis

I am happy with how it looks
and i never intended to make a 100% clone of Tiamat

Also have i finished the battery compartment cover/bumper assembly
and the coupler is now totally functional(although totally useless   )

some (red) led's have arrived this week
so i will look into that next week
and i also want to build a front bumper out of alu
but it's getting cold over here in holland and my shed is poorly isloted

Coming along nicely!
I think the height difference is actually very subtle and even in the 'high' position it's not too bad.
I would have slung Tiamat much lower if I could, but the loss of suspension travel and articulation made it hard to accept.

I guess 6WD trucks like this will always look a bit high up compared to 1:1 agricultural trucks - I re-found this page recently showing the only 1:1 6x6 big rig I have ever seen- and even with its limited suspension travel it looks pretty high up in the air http://monsterphoto.iwarp.com/kingoftrd.htm

Nice work on the coupler assembly too... if you were going to run a trailer on your trucks which would you go with?

i actually was planning, when these two builds were finished,
to build a sort of 8x8x8 tatra wheelbase monstertruck thing with a king hauler kabin on it
was even thinking about building a 10x10x10 at one point
but i dont think its gonna drive that well
or maybe drive more like a tank orso

I have seen a couple of 6x6 monster trucks
but never a 6x6 big rig indeed

and about the coupler assembly and trailer
i thaught about doing something you never finished
tiamat_progress31.jpg

but because of the arguments like you can read in the photo
its only an idea for the moment(also without steady income its difficult to realise financially)
and with the chrome cabin ,maybe a tanker trailer would look nicer
so i am thinking about it!

I will finish this truck first
before continuing with Son of Tiamat
because i want to drive it in the snow over here
(if it ever comes, its very late this year in holland)

The work on the leds is not finished yet
i will build a knight rider light behind the front window
or between the cabin and the sleeper
dont want it in the grill or in the bonnet(thats like kitt and not like a cylon)

and i have to find a place to mount the exhausts
and make that front bumper

Not sure if the name will be with or without "The" in it

I'd be very surprised if it didn't make a good showing. Most of the trucks entered get a decent amount of votes. Sometimes it takes a few tries to win. So don't be too quick to give up.

To add to what Andy said, get it out side in better lightening. A quality picture make all the difference as well.

BTW, the addition of the lights look cool! 8)

Holy poop! This is coming together really nicely! Flofox, you're right- In hindsight I definitely think the Knight Rider LEDs behind the windshield would look a lot better than what I was originally thinking- plus it would be a lot more noticeable. It also keeps in line with the tradition of what a Cylon is (at least the mechanical ones) as well...

I also definitely like the ground effect lighting. You should totally enter the Cylon to reader's rides- you have my vote!

I forgot to mention that I ended up abandoning the idea of mounting a trailer to Tiamat (and my other 6WD trucks) because at the time I could not figure out a way to protect and reinforce the fifth wheel mounting area. Also, that original Tamiya box trailer wasn't intended to withstand that kind of stress, and the design was probably not the best.

I am sort of considering the idea of doing it again, but it's pretty low on my priority list. If i had my way I would fabricate a trailer chassis from scratch and use the container truck model instead...

done the wiring last week
want to buy a cheap china light kit in the future ,
to use for the blinkers and brake lights
but money is insanely tight right now

the red leds in the side of the cabin ,
were already done by the previous owner of the cabin
they were hidden beneath the side H panel,
I liked them, so i kept them

I bought a cheap knight rider light and put that behind the window
looks much better then i thaught its gonna be, happy with that!

also mounted some king hauler rear light holders, without lenses ,
behind the sleeper windows, with red leds in them, very happy with that too

I payed big bucks for the exhausts,
but had to cut a big part of them! #-o
had to mount them directly on the cabin

I just have to make a plate to cover the open gap in front of the battery compartment
will also mount the antenna there in the future(in the middle)

made a couple of test drives in the garden
and was pretty happy with how it drives
but not for 100%!

the truck was a bit wobbly, when driving
It even fell on its side when i made a fast thight turn on tarmac #-o
Thank god there was only very slight damage on the corner of the cabin (very lucky!)
I will try to lower it a bit more
but i have to modify the lower frames for that(so the axles will sit more straight, theyre not straight now)
also is the battery for the lights(9,6volt) mounted very high(in the cabin)
so i will try to reposition that, or put in a smaller one
and maybe adjust/replace the shocks
but still the driving was awesome, especially in the dark with all the leds!

I made a couple of vids, and will try to upload them soon
I even recorded the fall on its side!

am anxious to finish it now
so will put some elbow grease in it the next couple of days

plss tell me what you think of it! :)

well ,I spend all day yesterday to modify the chassis
so now its finished!
I shortened the lower frames
It makes the shocks stand in a slight angle
but that doesnt bother me at all

the driving performance has improved alot because of the lowering
i also stiffend the front shocks a bit
am very happy with how it drives now
6x6's drive awesome !

I only have to make a plate to cover the hole in front of the battery compartment
and still havent decided how to mount the battery for the lighting

I used white wheels for the photos
because the chrome wheels arent glued yet
and i am thinking of putting foam inserts inside
not sure about that yet
so for now i will drive with white wheels
the white wheels also make it look a bit more like Tiamat
