New solid axle hard body build

If it uses driveshafts and straight axles, discuss it here.

New solid axle hard body build

Post by rknaub » Fri Mar 10, 2017 4:10 am

Spent the last few weeks reminiscing about my old clod crawler I built, then sold (viewtopic.php?f=46&t=29618&hilit=Peterbuilt). Decided it was time for another clod. Unfortunately I suck at build threads because I get too excited to build, and forget to take pics along the way.. so I'll just show you where I'm at up to this point...

Started with a couple Axial AR60 axles I picked up used, that were in decent shape, minus the bearings, they were all shot. Fast Eddy got a new set here in a couple days. The ring and pinion it came with were already the heavy duty flavor so that was cool. Axles and transmission rebuilt, it was time to find a Barbarian. Brett has been out of stock, and my attempts to ask him when he would have more went unanswered. Luckily was able to grab one from a member here. It came powder coated green, a'la Grave Digger, it looked cool - but I didn't really want to build 'another' Digger. Stripped off the powdercoat, back to shiny aluminum. Someday I may get it powder coated in black, not sure.

Met a guy online who was able to draw me up some beadlock wheels, since my CAD skills are still kind of sub-par. I went through at least a whole roll of PLA on my 3D printer, and after a few revisions, they turned out really nice. Loving the wheels, though one of the tires is pretty far out of balance.

Time for some electronics, picked up a mamba x and a 4600kv motor, a 400+ oz. waterproof servo, and threw in the receiver for my DX6r (I like scalers, need lots of channels!). This thing rips, wow, wheelies on demand with 3s, might drop down to a nice 2s, or just pick up an AVC receiver.

Now on to the body! Haven't found a nice basher body yet, but for when it sits on the shelf, it wears the New Bright Ford Raptor, the same body I got for my SCX 10.2, was lucky to score two of these rare gems! Drew up a quick body mount system in tinkercad, and off it goes the printer.

So this is where I'm at now, future plans are some beef tubes for the AR60's, and probably to open up the front diff. Blue vanquish knuckles and a titanium tie rod and drag link are on the way... bent the crappy tie rod that came on the axles the first time I smacked a tree!

Let's see some pictures!

Thanks! I'll get some proper pics soon. Waiting to be closer to finished.

Question...

I'm looking for a set of tires, the stockers I have now are horribly out of balance, I tried to balance them but they are waaaaaay off, one of them has two or three times the material on one side than the rest of the tire. It needs so much weight that I just don't feel comfy. The wobble gets pretty bad under brushless power.

Pretty much narrowed it down do JCConcepts Firestorms, Renegades, or maybe Proline Destroyers. Can you guys recommend something you've had good luck with as far as getting a good quality, mostly balanced tire? Not gonna be racing, just bashing around on asphalt and dirt. I'd say the Renegades are my last choice, as I'm going for the scale, possibly Bigfoot look.

What's your experience? Thanks for the suggestions!

Took it out for a bash in the new snow today, wow this thing is a lot of fun in the snow! However, the stock plastic gears in the transmission didn't last long.

Time for a proper hardened metal set! Gotta run to the store, hopefully Sunday, and grab them.

Finally got some firestorms put on today. I'm impressed with how little balancing clay they took. They might not be exactly perfect on the little balancer I 3D printed, but when you have a printer and a thinning wallet, you tend to print anything you can, lol. Very smooth now! Still really digging the beadlocks I printed too, haven't broke or cracked one yet, and the ability to change colors is fun.

Also put in an AVC receiver, wasn't sure I'd like it, but really does keep this beast under control at full throttle!

Those tyres look really great. I would buy some but I have too many sets as it is! Really like the hard body too.
