TA-02T Ford Ranger

Post by SFC K » Sat Feb 14, 2015 3:38 pm

Another Craigslist find. I have wanted one of these for a long time now. It really needs a good cleaning and a few minor parts (Body posts). I plan on leaving the body as is. I think it looks pretty cool with the dents and all. It also came with another chassis with the front drivetrain attached minus one dog bone and a bag full of spare parts.

I started tearing everything apart today and degreased everything. It was a tedious task but needed to be done.

Found out the motor mount was broken as well. Good thing a new one is on the B tree I ordered. Also the chassis was seriously warped from heat from the battery at some point. The parts chassis will be swapped out for the bad one.

Nice project Jeff - motor mount is the weak point on TA01/02 chassis due to ageing from motor heat. Best to swap out for a alloy one if its going to be a regular runner.

Asia Tees are normally cheap, and whilst their item isn't one piece i've never had an issue using blue threadlock on the mount post screws.

Pargu does a one piece alloy item and there is this Yeah Racing one piece item too..

Thanks for the info Percy!

I have everything cleaned now and am waiting for replacement parts. I am just waiting on bearings and new front uprights. Out of the four uprights, three of them had hair line cracks so those needed to be replaced.

Interesting while searching for bearings for the TA02/01 some stores had 4 different sizes listed for this model and some had two sizes. I went page by page through the manual and discovered the TA02T only uses two different sizes.

16 each 5x11x4mm and 6 each 5x8x2.5mm for a total of 22.

I have it put back together and it runs great! I painted the back portion of the body as well and blacked out all the yellow with black. I think it looks decent as a basher body. I will be on the look out for a new body down the road.

This was a fun project and I spent a lot of time cleaning parts but I think the final results were worth it.

I still have the long shaft that ties the front and rear gear boxes together coming so that will be swapped out once it arrives.

I did not even notice that. Interesting too because the TL-01 I got with this one has the same motor.
