Savage XL 5.9

Post by 94smasher » Mon Feb 17, 2014 4:51 pm

As the title states, I just got an HPI Savage XL. It only really has break-in time on it, otherwise almost new. Aluminum shocks, tuned pipe, sway bars...it had a few hop-ups on it. I traded a mostly stock Axial Honcho for it. I have heard that the XL can be a bit more troublesome than the X4.6, mainly due to the extra size and weight putting additional strain on drivetrain and such. Has anybody here experienced any of that? Are there any must-have upgrades for this thing? I will be putting a reverse module in it...just 'cuz of the sheer novelty factor of having reverse on a nitro truck...sorry about the lack of pics. Me and forum pics don't seem to get along anymore. :(

Thanks, I think I did alright in the trade. If I want another SCX10, I'll get the kit next time, anyway. This savage will be staying nitro...I have my Clod for an electric monster truck. If yours didn't stay 1/8 scale, what did it change to?

My uncle had the savage 5.9. He liked it except for the lazy turning it turned really slow and really wide. He upgraded the servo to a much stronger one and that helped a lot. Thä seemed to be the only issue that he really had with it.

Gunder463 wow! That's a wild looking rig! vwjuice, I had noticed the massive turning radius...it didn't surprise me much considering the size of the rig, but I'm sure a better servo would only help.

I was pretty surprised by the turning radius. My ofna Titan is wider and a hair longer and it turns sharper than a t-maxx.

The stock servo on my Savage didn't last a tank. Changed it for a Hitec and everything was way better. I didn't even get all that crazy, just used a HS-645MG. It still does a good job, even with Goliaths on it, lol not that steering is a big deal with the Savage - I like to just stab the throttle and hang on

I swapped on a set of Savage X wheels and tires in place of the huge-Halgars trucks are cooler than mine terra-pins that come with the XL. That, and I put in a Savox 1256tg servo. The turning radius hasn't gotten any better, but the rig certainly is more nimble. And yeah, pin the throttle and hang on is a good driving style for this rig. I've run a gallon thru it already, and it's a blast!
