Traxxas XL-5 esc and tamiya motor

Post by l300lover » Fri Jul 28, 2017 1:15 am

I am thinking about going with the traxxas xl-5 esc with y splitters to each motor on my super clod buster. should I stick with the stock silver cans or these Tamiya 23T sport tuned motors:

I want to use a 7 cell battery btw. The motors say they can handle 8.4V. It also works as a reverse motor for the back.

I'm no expert on Traxxas products, but I believe I read that the XL5 is only good for dual motors with 30t or higher. If you already have it go ahead and give it a shot, but there are much better ESCs out there for dual motors and are fairly inexpensive.

As for the 23t Tamiya motors I have never used them, but have heard they are nice. Are you looking for speed? If so these will be a little faster on 8.4v and half the price - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... XWHX0&P=ML I have run the Firebolts on 2S & 3S Lipo and they do pretty well. You can also run the stock 27t Clod motors on 3S, that will get the truck moving. It all depends on what you're planning on doing with the truck.

Is there a esc out there that just uses 1 battery but works with 2 motors like my super clod? I want to use the 23T sport motors from Tamiya.

The XL-5 has had a few versions, so you may need to be careful with how many volts you put into it if you're not sure which version it is. I have several of them, and mine are only rated for 2s, or 7.4v. They are very capable ESCs and work fine with dual motors, but I was a little disappointed in the speed on 2s. The newer ones, like what come with the TRX4, are rated for 3s. There are several ESCs out there that are built specifically for dual motors and only one battery. I've recently gone through this exact same situation and I posted a thread about it: viewtopic.php?f=52&t=30861, which may have some answers that you are seeking.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on that hobbywing esc. sounds like it will work fine with my setup!

Great, I'm sure you'll like it. I have been using it for a while in my mud Clod and its been great. I can definitely vouch for it being waterproof, its been pretty much submerged and still works perfectly. Hope you like it.

Can it handle a 7 cell battery with 2 23T motors?

It can take up to 4S (14.8v). According to the specs with 2S (7.4V) it can take any motors above 12T, so 23T should be a breeze!

As SixtysGuy said, you'll be fine with whatever you can throw at it. They even include an optional fan with the ESC. I'm not using it at the moment because I'm running it on a truck with stock 27t motors ,but its nice to have. I did run it on 3S for a pack and it was perfectly fine, didn't get hot at all.
