Gonna build a basher now!

Post by rknaub » Fri Oct 10, 2014 11:49 pm

Since my crawler is pretty much done, it's time to take what I have left over (pretty much just axles), clean em up and build a basher... Or racer.

The first set of packages showed up today. So let's get this started!
Image

One of the axle housings has a crack, and the gears have been locked. May leave the rear locked, but definitely gonna go with new open gears in the front, and a full set of Fast Eddy bearings.

The chassis has yet to arrive, but I can get started on the axles at least. Have yet to decide on a motor/ESC combo, but will probably do brushless. Was thinking Sidewinder 3, I like waterproof stuff. May go for the Toro stuff, or possibly HK, have to see what my next bonus check looks like!!

Nice start. 8) What is in the RC4WD bags in the bottom right corner?

Interesting. I was just looking at them on RCWD a couple days ago and they were sold out. :?

If you get them from Brett at CPE they come with 12mm hubs instead of 14, and the proper bearings. That's where I got mine, but then got the 17mm hubs from RC4WD.

Got some work done this weekend on the axles. First I tapped the cases and installed some hex screws for an axle tube quick change, but in hindsight, I'll probably have to take them apart when one breaks, oh well.
Image

New gears in both axles, and Fast Eddy bearings everywhere. Left the front diff open, locked the back with some JB weld.
Image

Installed my RC4WD XVDs in both axles, they are nice. Absolutely no slop anywhere, and I love that I can change hex sizes so easily. It was pretty interesting rebuilding these axles. There was quite the mixture of oilite and plastic bushings, and a bearing thrown in here and there. These axles came off the Peterbuilt crawler, when I replaced those with aluminum tubes.
Image

These little buggers put up quite a fight trying to slide them on the axle shafts, one of em even drew some blood. They are even harder to get off. Quite a few four letter words were uttered when I discovered I had forgotten to install the inner axle stiffeners, and had to take them apart.
Image

This is about as far as I can go until my servo mounts get here, not to mention the rest of it.

Threw the shaved stock clod tires that came with my Peterbuilt on my Ofna Monster wheels, they fit pretty nicely, but I gotta figure out how to properly secure them to the XVDs, which use a 5mm hex bolt. There's a pretty large opening to fill in those wheels.

More parts arriving soon!

My RCGuy pro steering kit came in today. Really love these mounts, and Roger is great!

Got home from work today and went right back to work, on the Terminator. I love all the mounting choices on this thing! Still waiting for the shocks to arrive.

The chassis didn't include any nuts for securing the sway bar to the lower links, but came with plenty of hex screws. Had a few lock nuts laying around.

Will be ordering motors/ESCs Friday payday! Oh, and a body!

Not completely... But probably gonna do dual mamba max pros, so I can have plenty of battery options. I'll probably need help with the mix on the radio for the two ESCs. Might just get the 4600kv combos, or just the ESCs and pick up a couple stock silver cans. Maybe I'll just do sidewinder 3 for the waterproof side of it... Can't really see needing 6s.

Basically, no idea yet.

No they are hot racing. I have the rcguy ones on my crawler, and prefer them - but can't find any. Have a post in BST looking for a set. Spoke with Roger at rcguy, he said he was planning on doing a few mounts and will make me a set, but it may be a while.
